Business English Diploma

The program is primarily a communications course targeting all students working in an English-speaking business environment. As a communications course, the program offers more than the traditional polishing of writing and speaking skills.

The focus is on improving students’ professional self-image, by helping them to navigate business situations in a confident and natural manner.

By encouraging the development of linguistic, social, and business skills, our goal is to equip our graduates with the tools to control and promote their own success in the job market.

Our mission in the Business English Diploma Program is to:

  • Equip students with a confident grasp of English as used in a business environment
  • Enhance students’ self-confidence in dealing with business partners on a global scale
  • Develop students’ chance of success in the job market

English as a Second Language

KGIC's curriculum is custom designed to reflect the dynamic and diverse needs of our student body. The aim of our curriculum is to combine traditional learning methods with flexible and contemporary teaching practices. The program is designed with a holistic approach, combining several skills to give students a well-rounded understanding of the English language.

Study hours: Every week 27 classes of 60 minutes (27 hours)

English for Academic Purposes

EAP at KGIC Toronto focuses on building the necessary skills to achieve successful results in an academic post-secondary learning environment.

  • Made up of a variety of drills, exercies and intensive skill-enhancing activities this course offers students the opportunity to adjust to a new academic environment prior to entering. It not only gives them access into the structure, lesson nature and intensity of the university classroom but also presents them with the opportunity to write and score entrance-level results on the CAEL Test, a Canadian wide recognised English proficiency measuring tool.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

During the 12 week program students will:

  • Read at a pace that allows them to comprehend and summarize material studied at a post-secondary level
  • Research topics for academic purposes including: presentations, reports and essays
  • Engage in structured and free form discussion with the ability to ask and answer questions related to academic topics
  • Be able to recognise various genres of literature and how to approach studying each
  • Write an academic research essay e
  • Practice taking lecture-based notes
  • Give presentations based on designated research topics
  • Become more familiar and confident with an assortment of testing styles
  • Write the CAEL Test (free if you register 15 weeks.)

Power Speaking and Modern Media

Who Should Take This Course?

  • Upper-level ESL students eager to improve their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills by means of modern media
  • Students who are interested in exploring various kinds of media and their influence on society in the 21st Century
  • Recommended for KGIC levels 3 and higher

  • PMM concentrates on listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • You will become a better listener and become more comfortable listening to a variety of audible media.
  • You will be exposed to a variety of articles from different sources, which will improve your reading speed and ability.
  • You will be required to write various types of articles and oral presentations.
  • You will gain self confidence and become a better speaker through the weekly Power Speaking session

TOEFL iBT

Reading

Reading continues to be one of the most important skills. Students will be instructed on essential reading strategies and study skills. By the end of eight weeks, students will be able to finish their reading tasks within the time frame; they will also become more familiar with typical TOEFL topics-all reading passages are excerpts from a variety of academic topics.

LISTENING

The Listening section prepares students to improve their ability to understand spoken English from North America and other English-speaking countries (Australia and Great Britain). Students will practice their listening skills by listening to conversations and lectures in academic environments.

Listening purposes include the following:

  • Listening for basic comprehension (listening for main idea)
  • Listening for pragmatic understanding (recognizing a speaker’s attitude or degree of certainty)
  • Connecting and synthesizing information (understanding the relationship between the ideas presented, making inferences and drawing conclusions).

SPEAKING

The speaking section prepares students for academic speaking skills. Academic settings are in the classroom (lectures and group discussions) and out of the classroom (library, bookstore, housing office).

In classroom settings, students will practice how to

  • Respond to questions
  • Participate in class discussions
  • Comment on readings and lectures or discussions

Outside of the classroom, students will practice how to

  • Participate in casual conversations
  • Express their opinions
  • Communicate in places such as bookstore, library

There are six tasks in the speaking section: the first two tasks are independent speaking tasks, and the remaining four tasks are integrated speaking tasks.

In Independent Tasks , students will practice 1. How to express and defend a personal choice from a given category e. g. important people, places, or events and 2. How to make and defend a personal choice between two contrasting behaviors or courses of action. All the responses are based on personal experience.

In Integrated Tasks , students will practice

  1. How to integrate three skills: Reading, listening and speaking and
  2. How to integrate two skills: Listening and speaking.
  3. In integrated reading, listening, speaking tasks , students will practice by reading a passage on a given topic and then listening to a speaker talk about the same topic. Students will learn how to answer the question by synthesizing and summarizing the information.
  4. In integrated listening, speaking tasks , students will practice by listening to part of conversation or lecture and then answering the question by summarizing or expressing an opinion.
WRITING

In writing section, students will prepare for two different writing tasks;

  1. Integrated Writing and
  2. Independent Writing.- Integrated writing task integrates three skills: reading, listening and writing.
On the test, students will have 20 minutes to finish this task
  • Independent writing task: this is the same type of task used on the computer-based TOEFL. On the test, students will have 30 minutes to finish this task.
