How to study English this summer

faq, learning english team2 Comments »

Its summer and you have a little spare time — so what are some of the best ways to improve your English?

Be patient and go slowly

Learning a language is hard and the more impatient you are the harder it will be. So take a deep breath and tell yourself that you are not going to complete this within the next week, or month, no matter how hard you try.

Read Everything

Reading is the quickest way to improving your English. If a reading a book is too hard, pickup an English magazine and read bits and pieces , and try to read more.

If you have a hobby — buy an English book related to your hobby. You will probably know quite a bit the book tells you already which makes reading it much easier. If you are on a budget — the Internet is a great place to start, here you can find anything about everything.

Watch lots of movies

No, I am not saying you should turn off the subtitles — but you should pay attention to what is being said on the screen. Most American movies have very simple dialogs and the plot is usually predictable but its all conversational English. Even better: On a DVD switch to English subtitles only.

A long time ago I was good friends with the local video store owner, and at weekends we ended up watching more movies than was really healthy. It did however make me learn to understand everything that was being said.

Try to speak English

The best way to practice is by using your language, try and try to speak as much as possible. Don’t worry about sounding stupid, that is just unnecessary fear. Constant practice is how you can improve your pronunciation and sentence structure.

Think in English

The hardest part about learning a new language is that you have to constantly translate in your head.

Try to practice making sentences in your head. This allows you to speed up the process, and maybe start thinking in English. Imagine that your earlier conversation with a friend would have been in English — how would it have sounded?

Enroll for an English language course overseas

Going abroad is a great way to have fun and learn English at the same time. Its being used around you everywhere — forcing you to pay attention. However, its going to be expensive, so its not for those on a budget.

Have fun!

Nothing is more difficult than doing something you hate — so if you are going to spend time learning English enjoying it is the first step to making sure you master it!

What is the best university in the world?

faq, undergraduate teamNo Comments »

The short answer: Harvard University

The long answer:

The best university in the world might not be the best at everything — and it depends very much on your requirements.

With the Academic Ranking of World Universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 2003-2007 set out to find how universities world wide ranked. Harvard University came up as the best university in each year.

This ranking has however been criticized that nobody is able to duplicate their work based on their stated criteria. So its not necessarily good science. For much more information on ranking, see also the Colleges and Universities Ranking page at Wikipedia.

I have not much money, can I study English in England free of charge?

The quick answer is of course: No.

You might be able to get scholarship, or sponsorship from someone but that is up to you to find out. Look around if there are scholarships available from your country government, city or local community.

Learning a foreign language, is English or Chinese more usefull?

faq team3 Comments »

I am a South American speaker of English (native Spanish), and I am wondering if I should continue to improve my English or start learning Chinese.

Studying any language is a huge investment in time and energy and you need to consider what you will be using your new skills for.

If you intend to communicate with other companies are these going to be Chinese ? If you intend to travel internationally then English is usually the best language for communication.

Learning Chinese is probably one of the hardest languages to master if you do not grow up with characters from a young age (eg. outside Korea or Japan). Basic spoken Chinese is fairly straightforward, but expect many years of hard work and memorization to master the characters.

English has the benefit that even a limited understanding will set you up for continuous improvement, just keep reading and listening.

But keep in mind that knowing Chinese is slightly more valuable, as the number of non-Chinese Chinese speakers is quite limited. But only if you intend to work in China, or for a company dedicated to working soley with China.

How does studying abroad help with my future plans?

faq teamNo Comments »

I am considering going to study abroad, how will this help me with my college studies, or future carreer?

Studying in a different country can help you with with your current studies as you get a slightly different way of looking at your subject. Different places have different approaches to learning.

But most importantly, it helps you on a personal level by learning about yourself. By setting yourself up in a different culture it helps you develop your independence and confidence. Completing a year abroad will give you a sense of accomplishment that will help you with your studies.

From a carreer point of view employers like to see individuals who are self driven and able to solve situations by themselves. By spending a year abroad you prove that you are quite capable of handling your own affairs.

faq, postgraduate teamNo Comments »

How much money do I need to prepare for a full-time MBA in the USA?

Tuition fees depend on the university you select. For the top 20 schools (those most favored by applicants and potential employers) average US $60K to US $100K for a full-time / evening program.

As that is a lot of money, many students take out loans, or are sponsored by their employers to complete the programs in the evening.

Are international students allowed to stay in UK for 2 years after their study?

Are international students allowed to stay in the UK for 2 years after their studies? Previously this was only in Scotland, but is this also valid for England now?

If you graduate from a UK university (either undergraduate or post-graduate) you can get a work permit / visa under the The Work in the UK scheme.

It is good for a non-renewable two-year period after which you are expected to transfer to another immigration category. Time spent under the Post-Study Work sub-category does not count towards permanent residence.

I want to study in Holland for my undergraduate degree, and major in business. Since I do not speak Dutch I am looking for a program taught in English. Which ones are famous (especially in Asia)?

The most famous (internationally) for business studies in the Netherlands is probably the Erasmus University in Rotterdam.

Erasmus University Rotterdam offers two completely English-language Bachelor of Science programmes (BSc). Both programmes are open to students aiming for an international career in Business and/or Economics. Apart from the Dutch students, about 40% of the students taking these programmes are international students from over 80 countries.
