The capital city of New Zealand (third largest city, with population 167 700) is situated on a splendid harbour at the southern tip of the North Island along the the Cook Strait. It sits on the passage that divides the North and South Islands and from Wellington a ferry service connects both islands. Wellington lays claim to be the events capital of New Zealand, it has three professional theaters, and organizes some 300 sporting, arts and cultural events every year.
Home to the government, the city is more formal than Auckland, and because of its many visitors it has a great many restaurants and cafes, a proud statistic is that per head of population the city has more restaurants than even New York. It is more densely populated than most other cities in New Zealand, due to the small amount of building space available between the harbor and the surrounding hills.
Many of the nations treasures are in Wellington, with the old government building (the largest all-wooden building in the world),the National Library, the Te Papa National Museum, a zoo and stunning views of the city from Mt. Victoria. You can find great shopping in Cuba street and there are plenty of historic sites to visit.
Besides the language schools several NZ universities have their campuses in Wellington ensuring that there is plenty of good student accommodation available.
The pace is quicker in Wellington and if you are on a working holiday visa the many companies and restaurants make finding a job not too much trouble if your English is above intermediate. The language schools are in the business district which is close to the harbor with its cafes and restaurants.
Wellington is called the windy city and it is a well deserved name. Winter and Spring are the windy seasons and the city is often blasted by strong winds. During the summer these die down, giving the city a pleasant climate.
