Christchurch New Zealand Ferrier FountainCalled the Garden City, Christchurch (pop 350,000) is located on the east coast of New Zealand’s south Island. Sheltered by the mountain ranges from most rain, the city is located in a flat plain at the foot of the Southern Alps. Its location ensures that the city has a tempered climate with some of the least rain in New Zealand. Settled from England, the inner city has still a very English feel to its shops, churches, schools and many gardens.

As the second most popular destination after Auckland for language students in New Zealand, Christchurch is a relaxed place to study. The city has lots of shops, cafes and restaurants, and places to go out with your friends and classmates. Don’t expect to go shopping extensively as you will be finished quite soon however. The many large parks within the city give plenty of opportunity for relaxation during the summer.

There’s a whole range of activities available in Christchurch, or just nearby. Many of the language schools have their own full activity programmes and they are also happy to introduce you to some of the programmes that you can join independently. Nearly all schools organize regular weekend trip to nearby sites, all the way to Queenstown with overnights.

The best time to go to Christchurch is the summer school holidays, from December to February - this is also the best time for beach weather. The warmer months (November to April) in general are busy. The exception is of course the ski resorts, which are busy during the New Zealand winter (June to October).
